The era of Squid Game as we know it has officially come to an end, but the mastermind behind the phenomenon isn’t leaving Netflix. Eight months after the series finale of the original show left fans divided, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has officially confirmed his next big project: a high-stakes crime drama titled The Dealer.
While not a direct sequel, The Dealer is being produced by First Man Studio—the same team that brought Squid Game to life—and is already being marketed as the next “must-watch” psychological thriller for fans of the death-game genre.
The Plot: From Survival Games to Casino Chaos
Unlike the children’s games of the original series, The Dealer takes place in the glamorous but dangerous world of underground gambling.
The story follows Geonhwa (played by Jung So-min), an ace casino dealer with a mysterious past. After being scammed out of her life savings and seeing her wedding plans ruined, Geonhwa is forced to “unseal” her hidden gambling abilities to protect her future. She plunges into a world where every card dealt could mean life or death, teaming up with a gritty gambler played by Ryu Seung-beom.

Why Now? The “Divisive” Squid Game Finale
The timing of this announcement is no coincidence. In July 2025, Squid Game Season 3 concluded the story of Player 456, Seong Gi-hun. While the season smashed viewership records, the finale was met with heavy criticism.
Fans were shocked by the dark ending, where Gi-hun ultimately sacrificed his life for a new player rather than reuniting with his daughter. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk later revealed that he had originally written a much happier ending but chose the darker path to reflect “urgent global sacrifices.” The Dealer is seen by many as a way for the creator to start fresh with a new concept while keeping the tension and social commentary fans love.
Is There Still More Squid Game Coming?
Even though the main Korean series is over, the Squid Game brand is far from dead. Netflix is expanding the “Squid Game Cinematic Universe” in three major ways:
- Squid Game: America: A US-based spin-off is currently in development with legendary director David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven) reportedly at the helm.
- The Challenge Season 2: The reality competition version of the show is returning with new contestants and even bigger prizes.
- Willy Wonka Crossover: A new 2026 reality show titled The Golden Ticket is being described as a mix of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Squid Game (minus the violence).
If you were disappointed by the ending of Squid Game, The Dealer might be the redemption you’re looking for. With a star-studded cast including Lee Soo-hyuk and Ryu Kyung-soo, it promises to deliver the same pulse-pounding anxiety and clever plot twists that made the original a global hit.
