The return of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End for Season 2 was supposed to be a cause for universal celebration. Following its debut on January 16, 2026, the series immediately reclaimed its throne as the highest-rated anime on major platforms. However, while the animation and story remain top-tier, the streaming situation has become a major headache for fans who rely on Netflix for their anime fix.
The Netflix Region Lock: Asia Only (For Now)
The disappointing update comes directly from the official Netflix Anime social media accounts. While the first season is available globally on the platform, Netflix has confirmed that Season 2 will initially only stream in select regions of Asia. A comprehensive list of these regions hasn’t been provided, leaving many international subscribers in the dark.
For fans in the United States and Europe, this means the “Netflix Jail” is back. While the season will likely land on Netflix Western libraries eventually, it likely won’t happen until the full broadcast concludes in Japan. This puts Netflix-only viewers months behind the rest of the conversation.
Crunchyroll Remains the Prime Destination
Fortunately for those who can’t wait to follow Frieren, Fern, and Stark, there is a silver lining. Crunchyroll remains the primary streaming home for the series outside of Asia. New episodes are dropping every Friday at 7:00 AM PT, shortly after the Japanese broadcast.
Currently, Crunchyroll is only offering the subtitled version. Fans waiting for the English dub will have to wait a bit longer, as an official release date for the dubbed episodes has not yet been confirmed by Madhouse or the distributors.
A Shorter Journey: Season 2 Episode Count
Adding to the “disappointing” nature of recent updates is the confirmed episode count. While the first season was a massive 28-episode run, Season 2 is currently listed for only 10 episodes. This is significantly shorter than fans expected for a series of this magnitude.
There is currently no word on whether this is a “single cour” or if a second half will be announced later in the year. For now, the 10-episode run is expected to adapt the Continued Northern Travels and Divine Revolte arcs, following the trio as they navigate the dangerous northern territories where only First-Class Mages are permitted.
What to Expect from Season 2
Despite the streaming drama, the premiere has been a critical triumph. The story picks up with the party running low on funds and discovering a cave filled with magic-neutralizing crystals. This provides a rare moment of vulnerability for Frieren and Fern, forcing the group to rely on Stark’s physical prowess.
The season also marks the return of the fan-favorite mage Wirbel, setting the stage for more complex interpersonal dynamics as the party inches closer to the northern reaches of the continent.
